E - fasting: The need of the hour

The term "fasting " means skipping food for a particular period. In many religions and communities, there exists the regular practice of fasting. Medical research shows that if a person is fasting, the body gets enough time to cleanse itself and rest, as most of the body's organs are at work to digest food and further function, while we eat food on a regular basis.

In the same manner,  the city of Bengaluru has started an innovative program of E-fasting. It is conducted by Mr. Bhadresh Shah of the Jain community under the name "jeeto," meaning win. It is divided into two shifts, one is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the second one is from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. The person participating in this program has to keep away from electronic gadgets for a minimum of 3 hours per day. If he continues for 50 days, in turn, he will score points accordingly. If he succeeds in keeping away for more than 3 hours per day, he will score more points. And per the points he scored, he will get 1 Rs, and the amount collected will be donated to any social cause in the name of that particular person. Now, from Bengaluru, it has switched over to other metros like Ahmedabad and Surat, and soon it will be spread throughout India because of the huge response of the participants.

Why is E-fasting necessary?

The main motto of this program is to create awareness among people about the increasing dependency on electronic gadgets. Today, people are becoming slaves to gadgets, and gadgets have become masters. Nowadays, it is observed that especially children and youth are spending the maximum time on electronic gadgets, and in turn, they are facing many problems like addiction, irritation, increasing anger, and other physical disorders like headaches, poor vision, obesity, and many more. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, for many, it became a necessity to spend time in front of the screen, but there has to be a moderate and balanced way to use gadgets like mobile phones and computers. Its main purpose is to save valuable time that we spend on electronic gadgets and utilize the time saved on either physical activity, creative job, or family.

We are all very well aware of the adverse effects of excessive use of gadgets. A program like E - E-E-fasting will definitely drive a message to use electronic gadgets in the most optimistic way possible. E- Fasting will give a break to the user and he or she can relax his or her muscle, can have a walk around the home, or simply have a glass of water, if it is not possible to keep away from the screen, for a long time, even one can make a weekly schedule that on this particular day or days, I would avoid screen exposure.
After all, man created science, and it should not master human beings; rather, science and all advanced technologies available today must be used in a balanced way for our betterment and prosperity.

Digital Detox :

Another term can be used to e-fasting as a digital detox, because it conveys the meaning, it refers to the practice of disconnecting from technology for a few hours, a day, a week, or even longer. The goal is to reduce the negative effects of technology and to create a healthier balance between our digital and physical lives. It works exactly as a process of body detoxification, when a person gets occupied with some unwanted and poisonous elements in the body, which is the basic cause of disease in the body, then detoxification is carried out to remove those harmful elements from the body to become healthy. In Ayurveda and naturopathy, different detoxification methods are available.

In the same manner, digital detoxification is necessary to eliminate the negative effects of technology on our personality. Such negative effects are health problems such as eye strain, neck pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and loneliness. First of all, we need to decide on the devices and duration of time to keep away from technology and find out alternative activities such as reading, exercising, meditating, spending time in nature, or being with loved ones. It's important to be mindful and present in the moment. So, focus on the activities that you have planned and avoid the temptation to check your phone or computer. Use this time to reflect on your relationship with technology and how you can create a healthier balance. It seems to be difficult at first, but with a strong will, regular practice can be developed.

Hence, it is important to do either e-fasting or make a Digital detox in our lives. So, let's unplug and reconnect with the world around us!!!
