1. Why does the conductor call Valli 'madam'?

Ans - The conductor calls Valli 'madam' because she gives all the answers to the conductor's questions very confidently like a mature and responsible person. By her responsible behavior, the conductor got surprised and called Valli 'madam'.

2. Why does Valli stand up on the seat? What does she see now?

Ans - Valli stands up on the seat because the lower part of her window is covered and she is excited to see outside, she sees different landscapes such as the canal, palm trees, grasslands, mountains, and the blue sky.

3. What does Valli tell the elderly man when he calls her a child?

Ans - When the elderly man calls her a child, she replies that nobody on the bus is a child. She also said that she has paid the fare of 30 paise like everyone else.

4. Why didn't Valli want to make friends with the elderly woman?

Ans - Valli didn't like the elderly woman because of her ugly look and habits as the lady was continuously chewing betel nuts and its juice was about to spill at any time, and its smell irritated her.

Ans - Valli saw a cow that had come before the bus, and she was running very fast right in front of the bus, as the driver horned, the animal was frightened and remained in front of the bus. The scene became funny and that made her laugh.

3. Why didn't she get off the bus at the bus station?

Ans - She didn't get off the bus at the bus station because she intended to come back home by the same bus, and she had only a return fare of 30 paise.

4. Why didn't Valli want to go to the stall and have a drink? What does this tell you about her?

Ans - Valli didn't want to go to the stall and have a drink because she didn't have enough money to buy the drink, even refused the free drink offered by the conductor of the bus, this shows that she was a wise, confident, and self-respected girl.

Thinking about the text -

Ans - Valli's deepest desire was to ride on the bus between her village and a nearby town. The following sentences show her desire-

"Day after day she watched the bus, and gradually a tiny wish crept into her head and grew there. She wanted to ride on that bus, even if just once. This wish became stronger and stronger until it became an overwhelming desire."

2. How did Valli plan her bus ride? What did she find out about the bus, and how did she save up the fare?

Ans - Valli planned that she would take the one 'o'clock afternoon bus, reach the town by one forty-five, and would come back home by two forty-five which was her mother's nap time. She also discovered that the town was six miles away from her village, and one side fair was 30 paise, and she saved her bus fair money by controlling herself by not buying peppermints, toys, and balloons.

3. What kind of person is Valli? To answer this question, pick out the following sentences from the text and fill in the blanks. The words you fill in are the clues to your answer.

Even she dislikes being treated as a child.

4. Why does the conductor refer to Valli as ' Madam'?

Ans - The conductor refers to Valli as ' Madam' because of her sensible, mature behavior. She answered all the questions of the conductor very confidently. She was more mature than children of her age. So, the conductor was surprised and to tease her, he called her 'madam'.

5. Find the lines in the text which tell you that Valli was enjoying her ride on the bus.

Ans - The lines that show that Valli was enjoying her ride on the bus -

Ans - Valli's mother said, "So many things happen around us, but we are usually unaware of them." Valli had gone on a bus ride all alone without telling her mother, hence she agreed with what her mother said.
