In the broader sense, any geographical region can be categorized as an area of scanty rainfall moderate rainfall, or heavy rainfall area depending upon the density of rainfall it receives. But because of some unexpected changes in the weather heavy rainfall area also receives less monsoon. In the season of monsoon maximum part of rainy water gets spilt away from us and directly reaches small streams rivers and thus causing many disasters like washing or destroying the top layer of fertile soil, flooding rivers, soil erosion, loss of lives and property, rising seawater level and many more. Very insufficient efforts are being made such as roof water harvesting, digging small trenches in the mountain or hilly areas but these efforts are not enough to solve the availability of water and maintain the groundwater table. In especially countries like India, the concept of a farm pond is more applicable where a major part of the population is directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. Many villages of India still facing the problem of water shortage and the situation goes worse in the summer season. In a particular village, if a series of farm ponds are made then up to large extent they can fulfil their water demand from the farm pond. It does not only solve the problem of the owner who has it, but it is effective for the adjacent area too, because of improvement in groundwater level or rich water table. So farm pond is the best way to conserve and save rainwater.
What is a farm pond:
These are excavated mainly in the rectangular-shaped (sometimes circular also) ponds in the steep or sloppy areas in the location where we want to collect and store rainwater. Within the period of 2 to 3 years, it gets filled up with sufficient water which in the future acts as the solid and firm source of water reservoir.
Size of farm pond:
Its size gets varies depending upon the area available, the requirement of water, and the density of rainfall but roughly it varies from 25 x 25 sq. m up to 100 x 100 sq. m or even more. Depth and height may vary from 1.5m to 3.5 m.
Benefits of farm pond:
- It reduces the availability of monsoon and makes water available throughout the year for agriculture, cattle rearing, poultry, fisheries, and other agro-based activities or even meets the demand for drinking water.
- It may be an effective way to minimize the disastrous effects of flooding soil erosion loss of lives and property and rising seawater levels.
- Farm pond maintains groundwater table which is the most prominent today's need. It recharges the bore or well in the vicinity area which becomes water resources for others.
- From farm ponds, water can be easily withdrawn with less power consumption as compared to other traditional practices for example drawing water from a depth up to 500 feet and even more.
- It generates a new kind of ecosystem that opens different possible ways such as agro-based industries or employment along with maintaining the ecological balance of nature.
- After checking water quality parameters like PH value, salinity, moisture, amount of rainfall received one can go for fisheries or chestnut farming which would be another added advantage besides farming.
Success story of Farm Pond
"Dewas district of the state MP (India) is the ideal example where series of adjacent farm bonds is made. Now they are able to take 3 harvest per year along with many agro-based cottage industries which brought prosperity to that area."
