Saikhom Mirabai Chanu - The Passionate Weightlifter!

All is well that ends well is truly justified by the weightlifter Mirabai Chanu (26) when she bagged the silver medal in the 49 kg category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. After the three unsuccessful attempts in the Rio Olympics 2026, “Did not finish” was written before her name. She came back home from the Rio Olympics with tearful, crying eyes, but never gave up. Because of her dedication and devotion towards the game, just after 1 year, she managed to win gold at the World Championship 2017, and in the successive year 2018, she won gold in the Commonwealth Games. After that, because of injury, she was forced to remain away from the training for about one and a half years, but then with her hard efforts, she managed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and made history by winning a silver medal in weight lifting.

At the event, she was wearing golden earrings gifted by her mother, and those earrings turned out to be good luck for her as she believed.

Her biography: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu was born in a small village called Nongpok Kakching, which is about 20 km away from Manipur's capital, Imphal. Among six brothers and sisters, she is the youngest. She might have created confidence in weightlifting when she used to collect more logs of firewood from the nearby forests than her elder brother. Mirabai Chanu always wanted to be an archer as she was much fascinated towards the hygiene and cleanliness of the game when she was searching for a guide who could teach her archery, fortunately, she saw a clipping of weight lifter kunjarani Devi and her childhood instinct of lifting heavy firewood logs guided her to choose a path of weightlifting. Anita Chanu, a weightlifter, insisted that she start coaching weightlifting.

She became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in the long 125-year history of the Olympics, besides her P.V.Sindhu won the silver medal in Badminton. In 2000, Karnam Maheshwari won the bronze medal in weight lifting.

Mirabai Chanu proved that a player who has overcome failure well deserves to lift triumph and glory. She became a true inspiration and torchbearer for many budding girl athletes on how to conquer against all odds and failure.

Her crowning glory, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna highest sporting honour of India 2018. Padmashree, the fourth highest civilian award of India, 2018, along with many other awards.

A warm salute to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu---A passionate weight lifter
