City of Indore: Another feather in the cap

Today city of Indore has added another feather to the cap by ensuring a 7-star city rating under the garbage-free city, a category of swachh survekshan 2021 besides the cleanest city of India last 5 successive years. The Indore Municipal Corporation did it by treating wastewater sources from households, commercial establishments, drainages, and small sewage streams up to the satisfactory level as per CPSB (The central pollution control board ) and realizing the treated water into rivers named Kanh and Sarswati and thus became the first water plus city of India.

According to Manish Singh, The District Collector of the city, "As per the guidelines of water plus protocol, 1746 public, and 5624 domestic sewer outfalls were tapped by the Indore  Municipal Corporation (IMC) and treated which freed city's Kanh and Saraswati rivers from being dumping grounds for sewage. Seven sewage treatment plants were constructed in the city and about 110 million liters of water per day (MLD) is treated and further used for gardens and other irrigation purposes in the city.

What are the advantages of water plus city :

  1. Up to a sufficient level, Indore city will meet its water demand from this treatment plant.
  2. Surrounding rivers will become completely free from water pollution which is today's need of the hour and it will have uncountable positive consequences.
  3. By recycling and reusing wastewater sources will save valuable freshwater resources and required electricity.
  4. It is an adaptable energy-sufficient program by which other big and metro cities of India will get inspired and follow Indore pattern whether it is wastewater management, garbage, and waste management or cleanliness is concerned.
  5. The problem of waterlogging in the city will be solved up to great extent.

In this regard, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, "Indore has been an example for the whole nation for its determination and dedication towards cleanliness. May it continue to bring glory to the state."
